Everybody should read fanfiction...
And here's why.
The large appeal of fanfiction are the deep roots it has entwined through much of any fandom. Someone perusing fanart may stumble across a link to a story they find interesting. A n00b might hear through a "fandom veteran" that there is "this awesome story OMG", and the next thing anyone knows
- Fanfiction promotes interest in the written word.
See them as starters. The language used is generally very basic, familiar with the "average joe", though no one is really average.
